The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a similar device made by German rival Siemens AG for the first time in June 2011. The machines use PET, or positron emission tomography, to identify cancer cells as they absorb chemical tracers. At the same time, they use MRI or magnetic resonance imaging to view surrounding tissue.
"The comparison would be that the PET scan is like a GPS system and the MRI provides the map," Philips spokesman Steve Klink said Monday.
The company did not set sales targets or pricing for the product.
