LargeCap Stocks to Keep an Eye on TodayTomahawk, WI 9/8/2011 (PennyPayDay) – Caliper Life Sciences, a provider of imaging and detection solutions for life sciences research, is being bought by scientific instruments provider PerkinElmer for about $600 million.

Caliper shares were surging 41.3% to $10.44 in premarket trading Thursday.

Homebuilder Hovnanian Enterprises reported a third-quarter loss of 47 cents a share, narrower than the loss of 50 cents a share that analysts, on average, were expecting.

Shares were gaining 4.9% to $1.73.

Shareholders of discount retailer Dollar General are selling 25 million shares of the company's common stock.

Shares were falling 3.2% to $35.95.

Men's Wearhouse expects third-quarter sales growth of 3% to 4%, which is in line with estimates. But the company gave above-consensus earnings projections for both the third quarter and full year, saying it expects adjusted earnings of 64 cents to 66 cents a share and $2.13 to $2.20 a share in the respective periods.

The company reported adjusted earnings of $58.3 million, or $1.11 a share, for its second quarter with total sales rising 22% year over year to $655 million, and same-store sales for its namesake brand increasing 10.9%.

The performance topped guidance for adjusted earnings of $1.02 to $1.05 a share, and ahead of the average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters for a profit of $1.04 a share.

Shares were tumbling 2.4% to $28.80.

General Motors said sales in China in August rose 13.4% from a year earlier.

Shares were down 0.9% to $22.65 as general market sentiment dipped on a report that weekly initial jobless claims rose 2,000 to 414,000 hours before President Barack Obama lays out his jobs growth plans before Congress.

Smithfield Foods, the pork processor, posted adjusted first-quarter profit of 69 cents a share, topping analysts' estimates, on strong earnings from packaged meats.

Sales in the quarter rose 7% to $3.09 billion from $2.9 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Smithfield to earn 67 cents a share in the quarter on sales of $3.15 billion.

Shares were up 0.6% to $22.25.

Online retail giant Amazon.com has cut a tentative deal that would allow the online retailer to postpone collecting sales taxes from Californians for another year, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Shares were down 0.4% to $219.01.

FedEx is considering updating its fleet with 50 planes from Boeing and Airbus in a deal potentially worth several billion dollars, according to Bloomberg.

Firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson expects second-quarter revenue of between $93 million and $96 million, below the average analyst estimate of $103.9 million.

First-quarter profit came in at a penny a share, beating the Wall Street breakeven target.

Shares were plummeting 53.3% to $1.89 in premarket trading Tuesday.

Flat panel display materials and technologies developer Universal Display said it has entered a technology license agreement with Panasonic Idemitsu OLED Lighting Co. , a joint venture between Panasonic Electric Works and Idemitsu Kosan.

Universal Display shares were climbing 11.3% to $57.

Discount retailer Dollar General reported second-quarter adjusted earnings 52 cents a share, compared with the average analyst expectation of 48 cents a share.

Shares were spiking 4.2% to $35.20.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based supermarket operator Winn-Dixie Stores forecasted adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $120 million to $135 million with same-store sales seen rising 2.5% to 3.5% for fiscal 2012 after topping Wall Street's profit expectations for its fiscal fourth-quarter results as same-store sales rose 3.2%.

Australian mining company Macarthur Coal has yielded to a sweetened 4.83 billion Australian dollar ($5.12 billion) offer from coal company Peabody Energy and steel producer ArcelorMittal.

ArcelorMittal shares were down 1.9% to $20.72.

Offshore contract drilling services company Transocean has been downgraded to neutral from outperform by Macquarie. Shares were sliding 1.6% to $54.23.

1-800-Flowers.com posted breakeven fourth-quarter earnings per share vs. the Wall Street consensus target of a penny a share.

Drew Industries, a leading parts supplier for recreational vehicles homes, said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kinro, bought windows manufacturer Starquest Products for $22.6 million.

Independent oil and gas company Clayton Williams Energy now plans to spend $385 million on exploration and development activities in fiscal 2011, a reduction of $54 million from previous estimates. The company has also lowered its oil and gas production expectations for the remainder of the year.

CoreLogic has hired advisory firm Greenhill & Co. to help the real estate and financial information company explore strategic options, including a possible sale or merger, Reuters reported.

LargeCap Stocks to Keep an Eye on TodayTomahawk, WI 8/16/2011 (PennyPayDay) – Clothing chain Urban Outfitters reported second-quarter earnings that fell 21% to $56.7 million, or 35 cents a share, as profit margins shrank.

The company beat analysts' expectations for earnings of 32 cents a share, boosting the shares in after-hours trading Monday. However, the stock was giving back those gains, plunging 10.4% to $26.61 in premarket trading Tuesday.

Solar panel maker Evergreen Solar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as it caved under stiff competition from cheaper Chinese products.

Share were dropping 9.4% to 16.3 cents.

Private-equity firm Carlyle Group is in exclusive talks to buy drug company Pharmaceutical Product Development for possibly as much as $4.3 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Pharmaceutical Product Development shares were popping 3.5% to $32.60.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway hasinitiated a small stake in the discount retail chain Dollar General, and now has a $51 million position.

Dollar General shares were popping 3.3% to $33.24.

BP has replaced its head of strategy as the company tries to find ways to revive its share price following last year's $41 billion Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Bloomberg reported.

Shares were down 3.2% to $40.34.

Wal-Mart reported its ninth consecutive decline in U.S. same-store sales, but second-quarter earnings and total revenue topped forecasts, sending shares up 2.9% to $51.45 in premarket trading Tuesday.

The retail giant earned $1.09 a share on revenue of $108.6 billion, receiving a boost from Sam's Club and its international unit. Analysts were calling for a profit of $1.08 a share on revenue of $108.28 billion.

Shares of Agilent Technologies were falling 2.8% to $36.45 after the measurement company forecasted adjusted net income of 79 cents to 81 cents a share on revenue of $1.74 billion to $1.76 billion in the current quarter. Analysts were estimating earnings of 81 cents a share on revenue of $1.75 billion.

Third-quarter revenue came in at $1.69 billion, roughly in line with the Wall Street consensus target of $1.66 billion. The company posted third-quarter profit of 77 cents a share vs. the average analyst estimate of 73 cents a share.

Home Depot, the No. 1 home-improvement retailer, raised its earnings outlook for the fiscal year and said second-quarter profit rose 14.3% on a rebound in its seasonal business.

Home Depot shares were rising 2.5% to $32.23.

Home Depot earned $1.36 billion, or 86 cents a share, in the second quarter, up from year-earlier earnings of $1.19 billion, or 72 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Home Depot to earn 83 cents a share.

Computer company Dell is expected to report second-quarter profit of 49 cents a share after the markets close Tuesday vs. last year's profit of 32 cents a share. Shares were down 0.3% to $15.45.

Branded food products company J.M. Smucker cut coffee prices by 6% for the majority of its brands including Folgers, as the costs for green coffee fell.

LargeCap Stocks to Watch Today

LargeCap Stocks to Watch TodayShares of discount retailer Dollar General were popping 7.4% to $32.64 after reporting earnings of 64 cents a share in the fourth quarter. Analysts expected the retailer to earn 59 cents a share.

Handheld device maker Research In Motion was rising 0.6% in premarket trading to $62.55 after it said Tuesday the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will be sold starting April 19 from all Best Buy stores and Best Buy Mobile stores in the U.S.

Oil giant Exxon Mobil was up 0.4% to $83.20 and BP was rising 0.9% to $46.23 as allied airstrikes against pro-Moammar Gadhafi forces continued to stoke uncertainty about Libya's ability to resume oil exports.

Drugstore chain Walgreen was flat at $42 after reporting second-quarter earnings of 80 cents a share, in line with expectations.

Drug maker Sanofi-Aventis was flat at $34 in premarket trading after it and Merck said they were ending their agreement to form a new animal health joint venture.

Banking and payment services company Discover Financial Services is expected to report first-quarter earnings of 57 cents a share after the markets close Tuesday.

Software company Adobe is expected to report first-quarter earnings of 57 cents a share after the markets close.

AT&T said on Sunday that it will acquire T-Mobile USA from Germany's Deutsche Telekom, potentially creating the largest U.S. wireless carrier. AT&T shares rose 32 cents Monday to $28.26.
