The Hang Seng was among the gainers with an increase of a quarter percent, but The Nikkei fell 0.4%, Australia was down about a third of a percent and Shanghai fell a slight fraction. European indexes are also mixed and little changed, with the Dax up a slight fraction and the Footsie down a slight fraction. US stock futures are essentially unchanged as I write.

*The January reading of Japan’s Machine Orders was stronger than expected at +3.4% month on month and +5.7% annualized.

*Euro area FinMins are meeting in Brussels today; though it might be easier to flag the days when this group is not in session.

*The February reading of Germany’s Wholesale Price Index matched the forecast at +1.0% month on month.

*French President Sarkozy, politicking for the election next month, suggested a “buy Europe” strategy.

*The Fed is scheduled to buy Treasuries today that are due to mature between 2/15/36 and 2/15/42; the results of the operation will be announced just after 10:00am CST.

*The Treasury plans to sell $32 billion 3 Year Notes today; the auction results will be announced just after noon CST.

*The February reading of the Treasury’s Monthly Budget Statement is due out at 1:00pm CST; it is expected to be a deficit of $229.0 billion.
