Oxford, MS 8/12/2011 (PennyPayDay) – As the P.G.A. of America’s director of fitness, David Donatucci, watched Rory McIlroy endure Thursday’s first round with an aching right wrist, he made a wish.Stop playing. Head directly to the 19th hole.
“I know it’s the P.G.A. Championship,” Donatucci said Friday morning, “but he’s 22 years old. A lot of people have won this tournament just once and we don’t remember who they are.
“I know people are into the Chubby Slam,” he added, referring to the clients of Chubby Chandler, who have swept the season’s other majors. “I don’t think that’s in the overall interest of Rory.”
The golf gods did not grant Donatucci’s wish. McIlroy persevered, shooting 70 on Thursday. Early in Friday’s second round, he displayed no ill effects from the injury diagnosed as a strain, though there was a triple-bogey on his eighth hole, No. 17.
Donatucci would not rule out the possibility of a small fracture. Even with all bones intact, he said, continued stress on the area before it heals can accelerate long-term conditions like tendinitis.
On Friday, McIlroy’s right arm sported a strip of restrictive tape intended to reduce wrist movement. Donatucci would have outfitted him with a glove to further contain mobility.
“I’m hoping a professional is working with him from the technique side,” Donatucci said, to prevent compensating for the discomfort by applying too much force elsewhere in the body.
Donatucci directs no blame toward McElory, a fierce competitor, for his persistence.
“There is an indestructible feeling,” he said, “especially for young athletes: ‘This is no big deal. I’ve played through pain before.’
“In golf, you get your money, your endorsements based on how you play. Rory is not thinking about 10 years from now. He’s thinking about now.”
