POMO Junkies Spreading QE3 Rumors

POMO Junkies Spreading QE3 RumorsOxford, MS 8/25/2011 (PennyPayDay) – You might find them scattered along the curbs of Wall Street . . . with glazed eyes . . . British teeth . . . and mysterious lesions on their skin. They approach Wall Street’s upscale-appearing pedestrians, making such requests as: “POMO?” . . . “Late-day rally?” . . . “Animal Spirits?” These desperate souls are the “POMO junkies”.

Since the Fed concluded the last phase of quantitative easing on June 30, the POMO junkies have been hopeless. They can’t survive without those POMO auctions, wherein the New York Fed would purchase Treasury securities – worth billions of dollars – on a daily basis. After the auctions, the Primary Dealers would take the sales proceeds to their proprietary trading desks, where the funds would be leveraged and used to purchase high-beta, Russell 2000 stocks. You saw the results: A booming stock market – despite a crashing economy.

On Tuesday, the POMO junkies took advantage of Ben Bernanke’s upcoming speech at the annual Federal Reserve economic symposium in Jackson Hole as an opportunity to start circulating rumors. During his 2010 Jackson Hole speech, Bernanke announced the Federal Reserve’s plan to purchase $600 billion in Treasury securities – the second phase of its quantitative easing program (QE2).

Rumors of yet another phase of quantitative easing were spread furiously on Tuesday, sending the major stock indices skyward. After the market closed, even the relentlessly-bullish CNBC dismissed the possibility that Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech on Friday would herald in a third phase of quantitative easing (QE3). Steve Liesman remarked that “… just because it happened last year, markets should not to expect it to happen again.” CNBC’s Daryl Guppy warned of the consequences created by the rumor-mongering, when he explained that a “Jackson Hole Disappointment” could cause the NASDAQ to drop to 2000.
